The debate elsewhere: stimulus and tax havens

Jeffrey Sachs has an interesting take on the stimulus debate in the Scientific American here - any comments? - while the Tax Justice Network's blog examines and critiques steps taken in last week's UK budget to combat tax evasion and avoidance.

-America ranks 22nd out of 23 high-income countries in public social outlays as a percent of national income (ahead only of Ireland), for health, pensions, income support, and other social services-(From the Stiglitz article.) So Ireland is last on the list, and yet the calls now are for further cuts in these areas. There is something seriously wrong with Irish political economy.
